Whenever artificial intelligence or a new robot appears in the news, one question quickly follows: Will this technology take people’s jobs?
The honest answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no. AI can automate writing, analysis, customer support, and administrative work, while robots can handle manufacturing, transportation, inspection, and other physical tasks.
At the same time, these technologies create demand for engineers, technicians, trainers, cybersecurity professionals, and many roles that did not previously exist.
So, will AI and robots create more jobs than they replace?
They might, but a positive global job total would not mean that every worker benefits. New positions may appear in different industries, countries, and skill levels from the jobs that disappear.
A factory worker cannot instantly become a robotics engineer, and an entry-level writer may not easily move into AI governance. The real issue is therefore not only how many jobs exist. It is whether workers can move into the new opportunities quickly, fairly, and successfully.
Why It Is Difficult to Predict the Final Job Count
Predictions about technology and employment depend on many uncertain factors.
These include how quickly businesses adopt automation, how capable future systems become, what governments regulate, and whether companies use productivity gains to expand or simply reduce costs.
Economic growth, ageing populations, climate policies, trade, and consumer demand also affect employment. This makes it difficult to separate jobs created specifically by AI from those produced by wider changes in the economy.
The World Economic Forum projects that major global trends could create 170 million jobs and displace 92 million by 2030, producing a net increase of 78 million roles.
However, those numbers cover technological, economic, demographic, and environmental changes-not AI and robotics alone.
Forecasts should therefore be treated as informed scenarios rather than guarantees. They show possible directions, not an exact picture of what every labor market will look like.
AI Usually Changes Tasks Before Eliminating Jobs
A job is rarely one single activity. It is normally a collection of routine, creative, social, analytical, and physical responsibilities.
An accountant may use AI to categorize transactions but still advise clients. A customer-service agent might receive automated reply suggestions while handling emotional or unusual complaints personally.
The International Labour Organization estimates that one in four jobs worldwide has some exposure to generative AI. However, its research suggests that transformation is more likely than complete replacement because most occupations still contain tasks requiring human involvement.
This distinction matters. When technology automates 20% of someone’s duties, the job may become more productive rather than disappear.
The outcome depends on how the employer responds. A company can use the saved time to serve more customers, improve quality, and shorten working hours—or it can reduce its workforce.
Which Jobs Could AI and Robots Replace?
The most vulnerable tasks tend to be routine, predictable, and easy to measure.
Generative AI can affect data entry, basic content production, document summarization, translation, scheduling, bookkeeping, and scripted customer support.
Physical robots are effective at repetitive manufacturing, packaging, material handling, and warehouse transportation. Entry-level positions may face particular pressure because they often contain more routine assignments.
Stanford’s 2026 AI Index reported that employment among software developers aged 22 to 25 had fallen by nearly 20% since 2024, while employment among older developers was still growing.
Similar pressure was appearing in other highly exposed fields, including customer service. However, exposure does not guarantee displacement. Cost, reliability, safety, regulation, customer preferences, and technical limitations can slow automation.
A robot may perform one factory task well but still require people to install, maintain, supervise, and repair it.
What New Jobs Could Be Created?
AI and robotics directly create specialist roles such as machine-learning engineer, robotics technician, automation integrator, AI safety researcher, data-center operator, and model evaluator.
They also create supporting work. Businesses need cybersecurity specialists, compliance teams, trainers, product managers, maintenance workers, and professionals who can redesign workflows around new systems.
Some opportunities will appear outside the technology sector. Higher productivity can lower prices, increase demand, and allow businesses to expand. That expansion may create roles in sales, logistics, construction, healthcare, education, and other services.
The World Economic Forum expects rapid growth in AI, data, software, cybersecurity, and robotics-related occupations. It also predicts strong growth in care work, education, delivery, construction, and agriculture, partly because of demographic and economic changes.
This means the future job market will not consist only of programmers. Many growing positions will combine technical tools with industry knowledge and human interaction.
Robots Can Complement Workers Instead of Replacing Them
In manufacturing, robots are often introduced to perform dangerous, heavy, or highly repetitive tasks.
A robotic arm might lift a large metal part while an employee handles inspection and problem-solving. An autonomous mobile robot can carry materials, allowing warehouse workers to spend less time walking long distances.
The International Federation of Robotics reported that global industrial robot installations remained above 500,000 units annually through 2024.
The continued rise of automation shows that more workers will encounter robotic systems, even when they are not employed in traditional technology roles.
Complementary automation can improve safety and productivity without removing the employee entirely. However, it may reduce the number of workers needed for a particular production volume.
Whether employment grows depends partly on what the company does with its increased efficiency. Businesses that expand output may retain or add workers, while those operating in stagnant markets may cut positions.
A Net Gain Can Still Hurt Millions of People
Even when technology creates more jobs than it replaces, the transition can be painful.
A new AI position may require advanced training and be located in a major city, while the displaced role may be an administrative job in a smaller community. The numbers may balance globally while individual workers face unemployment, lower wages, or forced relocation.
Benefits may also be distributed unevenly. Workers whose abilities complement AI can become more productive and valuable, while those performing easily automated tasks may lose bargaining power.
Recent IMF research found that vacancies requiring AI skills often offer higher wages.
However, regions with stronger demand for AI-related skills experienced lower employment in occupations that were highly exposed to AI but offered little opportunity for human-AI complementarity. Younger workers may be especially vulnerable to this pattern.
This is why counting jobs alone is insufficient. Job quality, pay, stability, location, training access, and career progression matter too.
Skills Will Decide Who Benefits
The workers most likely to benefit are not necessarily those who can build advanced AI models. In many professions, the advantage will come from knowing how to use technology alongside genuine industry expertise.
A nurse who can evaluate an AI-generated clinical summary, for example, may be more valuable than someone who understands the software but lacks healthcare knowledge.
Technical literacy will matter, but so will analytical thinking, communication, leadership, adaptability, and ethical judgment. These human capabilities help workers evaluate automated output and manage situations that do not fit a predictable pattern.
The World Economic Forum estimates that 59 out of every 100 workers may require training by 2030. Employers identified skill shortages as one of the largest obstacles to adapting their businesses.
Training must also be available before jobs disappear. Telling unemployed workers to “learn AI” after displacement is much less effective than giving them practical opportunities while they are still employed.
What Governments and Employers Need to Do
Whether AI creates a broadly positive job market will depend heavily on policy and business choices.
Employers can begin by redesigning roles around collaboration rather than assuming every automatable activity should lead to a staff reduction. Employees should be involved when companies introduce systems that affect workloads, monitoring, hiring, or performance evaluation.
Governments can support vocational training, apprenticeships, career guidance, income protection, and portable benefits. Education systems will also need to update courses more frequently as skill requirements change.
The OECD notes that AI can improve productivity, job quality, inclusion, and workplace safety. It also warns that poorly managed adoption can cause displacement, privacy violations, discrimination, and loss of worker agency.
The technology itself does not determine whether the transition is fair. Institutions decide how quickly workers receive support, how productivity gains are shared, and whether affected communities receive new investment.
How Workers Can Prepare
Start by examining your current job task by task. Identify which activities are routine, digital, repetitive, or based on standard templates, since these are usually the easiest to automate.
Then learn how relevant AI or robotics tools are being used in your industry. The goal is not to master every new platform but to understand how technology can improve your work and where it remains unreliable.
Strengthen skills that complement automation. These may include customer relationships, troubleshooting, decision-making, communication, creativity, safety management, and deep professional knowledge.
Do not assume that your current job title will remain unchanged. Careers may increasingly involve moving between related roles as technology reorganizes responsibilities.
The safest strategy is neither ignoring AI nor believing every promise about it. Learn enough to use the tools productively, question their output, and recognize when human judgment is still essential.
AI and robots may create more jobs than they replace, but no current forecast can guarantee that outcome. Technology will generate new occupations, improve productivity, and help businesses expand, while also reducing demand for many routine cognitive and physical tasks.
Even a positive net job total can hide serious disruption. New roles may require different skills, appear in different locations, or remain inaccessible to the workers who lose their jobs.
The final result will depend on training, education, business strategy, labor protections, and how productivity gains are shared.
Begin preparing by studying how automation affects your profession, developing complementary skills, and treating continuous learning as part of your career-not as an emergency response after change arrives.
